Wix is built to grow with a business further than most website builders do. Plans step up, storage climbs, collaborator seats multiply, commerce features unlock. So when an owner says they have outgrown the platform, they are usually describing one of two very different things — and the right response depends entirely on which one it is.
The first is a plan ceiling: a limit you can buy your way out of by moving up the ladder. The second is a structural boundary: something that is true of every Wix plan at any price, because of how the product is built. Ceilings are a budgeting problem. Boundaries are a platform decision. Below are the signs people report, sorted into those two piles, then the options that exist before a migration and the ones that don't.
Seven signs you're hitting the edges of Wix
- Storage is your recurring conversation. Wix's own plans page puts Light at 2 GB, Core at 50 GB and Business at 100 GB, with unlimited storage reserved for Business Elite. A catalogue of product photos, video and downloadable PDFs can consume 100 GB faster than a marketing site ever will. This is a ceiling, not a boundary — but note the price of the fix: Elite is roughly four times the Business tier.
- Your developers have more ambition than your plan allows. Wix does have a code side — Velo and the developer tooling around it — but the plans page lists the advanced developer platform as an Elite feature. If custom logic is a weekly activity rather than a rare favour, the cheapest official route to it can be a top-tier subscription. Teams that hit this usually want code they can host and version anywhere.
- Team size outruns the seat model. Collaborator limits step up 2, 5, 10 and 100 across the tiers. That covers a lot, but growing teams hit a subtler wall: roles, approvals, staging environments and client-workflow features are the territory of Wix Studio, the agency product with its own pricing — not of the consumer plans most small businesses are on.
- Commerce complexity, not commerce volume. Selling well is Wix's home ground. What strains it is operational depth: B2B quoting, custom checkout logic, warehouse or ERP integrations, tax handling across many jurisdictions, or a merchandising team that wants to live inside a commerce system all day. Stores at that stage usually drift toward a dedicated commerce platform — our Wix vs Shopify breakdown covers where each wins.
- Content operations become the main growth engine. Wix Blog is a good publishing tool. It is not a headless CMS, an editorial workflow for a dozen writers, or a base for thousands of programmatically generated pages. Content-led companies eventually want structured content they can reuse across site, app and newsletter; that is a Wix vs WordPress conversation.
- You need the site itself to be portable. This is the real boundary. Wix is closed hosting by design: your site runs on Wix servers, and there is no export that produces a working copy of it elsewhere. Content, images, product data and contact records can be exported as files; the running website cannot be lifted and replanted. If portability, data residency or an audit requirement is a condition of your business rather than a preference, no Wix plan satisfies it.
- Support and uptime expectations exceed the plan's role. Every paid tier includes 24/7 customer care, and Elite adds priority support. But if you need contractual response times, an account manager or escalation paths in writing, you are describing an enterprise agreement — the Wix Enterprise conversation, not a plan upgrade.
Try these four before you plan a migration
A migration is expensive in money, time and search traffic. Three of the seven signs above are plan-shaped, so run the cheap options first:
- Treat storage as a media problem, not a plan problem. Host long video externally, serve large images at the size they display, and archive old assets locally. Many “we need unlimited storage” cases are really a handful of heavy files.
- Jump one tier instead of changing platform. Compare what the step actually costs against a rebuild. Our Wix pricing guide lists each tier's included storage, seats and commerce features side by side, and free plan vs paid plans explains what unlocks where.
- Split the heavy function off Wix. The most common arrangement for a growing business is a hybrid: keep the marketing site where it is easy for non-technical staff to edit, and run the difficult function on a specialist — a store on a commerce platform, a CRM, an email tool, a booking system. Wix is genuinely good at being the front door; it does not have to be the whole house.
- Time your upgrade to a sale window. If you decide to move up a tier anyway, when you buy matters. Wix runs seasonal promotions that have historically taken up to about 50% off annual plans while they run, applied automatically at checkout with no code to hunt for — and Black Friday 2026 falls on November 27, the deepest window of the year on past form. The deals hub shows what is live today and the Black Friday page tracks the November event.
If you do move: what your options look like
| Destination | Choose it when | The cost you're accepting |
|---|---|---|
| Higher Wix tier | The blocker is storage, seats or Elite features | Money only; no rebuild, no traffic risk |
| Wix Studio / Enterprise | Agency workflows or contractual support | New product and pricing to evaluate |
| Shopify | Commerce operations dominate the business | Design effort moves to themes and apps |
| WordPress | You want ownership, portability, deep CMS control | Hosting, updates and security are now yours |
| Squarespace | Design-led presence with simpler operations | Less extensibility than the field above |
What actually moves — and what doesn't
Treat a Wix migration as a rebuild with a head start, not a lift and shift. What transfers:
- Content and data. Blog posts export for import into another CMS; products move as CSV; contacts and form submissions export before your subscription lapses. Export everything early — once the site is down, access to that data becomes a fight.
- The domain. You registered it, you own it. Point it at the new host, then decide whether to transfer the registration too.
- Design intent. Screenshots, brand colours, type choices and page structure travel as references. Nothing else about the look carries over automatically.
What doesn't: the published site, its layout and any Velo code — that work is redone. Nor does your search position travel untouched. Expect a temporary dip while the new site is crawled, and protect it with a one-to-one redirect map for every existing URL, unchanged titles and meta descriptions, and no structural cleanup at the same time. Keep the old subscription live until redirects are verified. Budget weeks, not a weekend, and don't launch during a peak sales month.
And a closing honesty note in the other direction: plenty of businesses never outgrow Wix. If you sell services or a modest product range, edit your own site, and run a team under ten, the platform's ceilings sit well above your needs — and the money and traffic risk you'd spend escaping them is usually better spent on merchandising and content.
